Why can't a website play sound through the earpiece?
Phones send web and media audio to the loudspeaker at the bottom. Only calls, voicemail and some messaging apps switch audio to the earpiece. That's why any earpiece test that just plays a tone in the browser is really testing the loudspeaker. A short voicemail call is the only reliable check, and it takes under a minute.
Common earpiece problems and causes
- Quiet calls: lint in the earpiece mesh, a screen protector or case lip covering the slit, or Noise reduction and hearing settings turned on.
- Muffled or crackling audio: water in the mesh, a torn speaker membrane, or a loose connector after a drop or screen replacement.
- No sound, but speakerphone works: a Bluetooth device is still connected, audio is routed to another device, or the earpiece has failed.
- Sound only in one direction: if they can't hear you, test the microphone instead.
Where is the earpiece on my phone?
On iPhone it's the thin slit above the Dynamic Island or notch. On Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones it's a very thin gap between the top of the screen and the frame. Many phones also use the earpiece as the second stereo speaker, so a weak earpiece often sounds like unbalanced stereo in the speaker test.
Checking a used phone
When buying a used phone, make a short call and listen through the earpiece before paying. Aftermarket screen replacements sometimes leave the earpiece mesh or proximity sensor misaligned. Test the proximity sensor in the same call, or run the full diagnostic to check everything at once.
