Why test your phone's vibration motor?
The vibration motor (or linear haptic engine) inside your phone provides crucial physical feedback for typing, notifications, and gaming. If you frequently miss calls while your phone is on silent, your vibration motor might be failing.
Common Causes of Vibration Failure
- Software Settings: Check your phone's settings. Many devices have "System Haptics" or "Vibrate on Ring" toggled off by default to save battery.
- Mute / Silent mode: Android browsers can't vibrate while the phone is set to Mute. Switch to Vibrate or Sound mode first.
- Battery Saver Mode: Android's battery saver mode automatically disables all haptic feedback. Ensure it is turned off before running this test.
- Physical Damage: Dropping your phone can dislodge the tiny motor from the motherboard. If you hear a loud buzzing or rattling noise instead of a clean vibration, the motor housing is likely loose.

Why is my phone not vibrating in this test?
On Android, Chrome and other browsers cannot vibrate while the phone is set to Mute (silent), and Do Not Disturb or Power saving can block it too. Switch the sound mode to Vibrate or Sound, then make sure Media vibration is turned up (Samsung: Settings › Sounds and vibration › Vibration intensity). On iPhone, turn on System Haptics in Settings › Sounds & Haptics. If calls and the keyboard do not vibrate either, the motor is likely faulty.
Does this vibration test work on iPhone?
Yes. Safari does not allow long vibration patterns, so on iPhone our test triggers short Taptic Engine clicks instead. You should feel crisp taps with each button press when System Haptics is turned on.
What does a buzzing or rattling vibration mean?
A loud rattle or buzzing instead of a clean vibration usually means the vibration motor or Taptic Engine has come loose inside the phone, often after a drop, or a screw is missing after a previous repair.
How much does it cost to replace a vibration motor?
The part is inexpensive, typically $10 to $30, and many independent US repair shops replace it for $50 to $90 including labor. On iPhones the Taptic Engine is a larger part and costs more.
