How to test your phone sensors
Your smartphone is packed with tiny micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) that detect motion, orientation, and environmental changes. The most important ones for gaming, photography, and navigation are the accelerometer and the gyroscope.
The Accelerometer
Measures linear acceleration across the X, Y, and Z axes. This tells your phone which way is "down" (gravity). It is what allows your screen to auto-rotate when you turn your phone sideways.
The Gyroscope
Measures the rate of rotation around the axes. While the accelerometer knows which way gravity is pulling, the gyroscope tracks twisting and turning. This is crucial for VR, AR, and stabilizing your camera.
Troubleshooting Sensor Issues
If the bubble in the tool above doesn't move when you tilt your phone, or if your screen refuses to auto-rotate, you likely have a sensor issue.
- Software Glitch: Restart your phone. A frozen OS thread can sometimes lock up the sensor data stream.
- Browser Permissions: Browsers like iOS Safari require explicit permission to read motion data to prevent tracking. Ensure you tap "Allow" when prompted.
- Hardware Damage: Drops and severe impacts can permanently dislodge the microscopic moving parts inside the sensor chip, requiring a motherboard repair.

What's the difference between a gyroscope and an accelerometer?
An accelerometer measures linear acceleration and gravity, so it knows which way is down and powers auto-rotate and step counting. A gyroscope measures rotation speed, which powers smooth motion in games, AR apps, panoramas and video stabilization.
Why does my screen not rotate?
First check that rotation lock is off in Control Center (iPhone) or Quick Settings (Android). If the accelerometer values in this test do not change when you tilt the phone, the sensor is not responding and a restart or a hardware repair may be needed.
Why do sensors show no data on iPhone?
Safari requires permission for motion and orientation. Tap Allow motion sensors when prompted. If you previously tapped Don't Allow, close the tab completely and open the page again.
How do I calibrate the compass on my phone?
Move away from magnets, laptops and metal surfaces, then wave the phone in a figure-8 motion several times. On iPhone, make sure Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services › System Services › Compass Calibration is on.
Does a magnetic case affect the sensors?
Magnetic cases, wallets and car mounts can confuse the magnetometer (compass) and cause navigation apps to point the wrong way. They do not affect the accelerometer or gyroscope.
