Guided 3-Step Phone Test

Most web browsers (iOS Safari, standard Android Chrome) restrict web pages from reading the proximity sensor directly for privacy reasons. Follow this standard test on your handset:

1
Make a phone call and put your hand over the top of the screen
Dial your voicemail, an automated test line, or a friend, and keep the phone in your hand.
2
The screen should turn off when your hand covers the proximity sensor
Bring your palm or ear within 2-5 cm of the top earpiece. The display must go completely dark.
3
If it doesn't turn off, the proximity sensor may be faulty
Lift your hand away. If the screen stayed on the entire time or fails to wake up, the sensor is defective.

What the Proximity Sensor Does in a Smartphone

The proximity sensor is a compact hardware module mounted at the very top of your smartphone, situated directly adjacent to the earpiece speaker and front-facing camera. Its primary responsibility is detecting when an object—most commonly your ear, cheek, or the inside of your pocket—comes within close physical distance (typically 2 to 5 centimeters or 1 to 2 inches) of the phone's upper bezel.

Hardware Optical Sensor

Standard on Apple iPhones and flagship Android smartphones. It fires an invisible pulse of infrared (IR) light from an LED emitter. When your face approaches, the IR light bounces back into a photodiode receiver, instantly signaling the processor to cut display power.

Virtual & Ultrasound Sensors

Common on modern bezel-less phones and budget devices (such as Xiaomi, Redmi, and select Samsung Galaxy models). Rather than optical hardware, it broadcasts inaudible ultrasonic audio pulses via the earpiece speaker and combines microphone echoes with gyroscope tilt data.

Why Your Phone Relies on the Proximity Sensor

  • Prevents Accidental Touch Inputs: When holding your smartphone against your ear during cellular phone calls, WhatsApp calls, or FaceTime audio, your ear and cheek make direct contact with the glass. The proximity sensor instantly cuts power to the capacitive digitizer, preventing you from accidentally muting your mic, pressing the keypad, putting callers on hold, or hanging up.
  • Massive Battery Conservation: Smartphone displays are by far the single largest consumer of battery power. Turning off an OLED or 120Hz LCD display during a 45-minute conversation saves tremendous battery life and keeps the device significantly cooler against your ear.
  • Pocket Mode Protection: When your device is slid into a pocket, purse, or backpack, the proximity sensor informs the operating system to ignore random fabric touches and fingerprint scanner attempts, preventing phantom dialing and battery drain.
  • Voice Note & Audio Message Privacy: In apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, and iMessage, lifting your phone to your ear while listening to a voice memo triggers the proximity sensor, automatically switching audio output from the loud bottom speaker to the private earpiece speaker.

Common Proximity Sensor Issues (Screen Stays On During Calls)

Because proximity sensors rely on precise optical reflection or acoustic bounce-back, they are susceptible to environmental interference, physical misalignments, and software calibration glitches. Below are the most frequent symptoms:

1. Screen Stays Lit During Calls (Cheek Tapping)

The most notorious symptom: while talking, the screen remains fully illuminated. Your cheek unintentionally activates the mute button, dials random numbers, opens your calendar, or drops the call. This indicates the sensor fails to register proximity ("stuck in FAR state").

2. Screen Turns Black and Refuses to Wake Up

When you pull the phone away from your face to hang up or enter an automated menu extension, the display remains pitch black. You cannot wake the screen with taps or the power button until the other person disconnects. This indicates the sensor is "stuck in NEAR state."

3. Persistent "Do Not Cover Earphone Area" Warning

Often seen on Samsung, Xiaomi, and OnePlus devices. Every time you unlock your phone, a full-screen prompt warns that the top area is covered. This is triggered by pocket-detection algorithms misinterpreting a dirty bezel or misaligned screen protector as an obstruction.

4. Screen Flickering Wildly On and Off

The display rapidly flashes on and off while holding the phone against your ear, causing jarring vibrations or repeated screen wake-ups. This is common on devices with virtual ultrasonic proximity algorithms when held at slightly tilted angles.

How to Fix Proximity Sensor Problems

Before assuming your motherboard or optical sensor is permanently damaged, try these practical troubleshooting steps in order. Over 80% of proximity sensor issues are caused by surface debris, screen protectors, or software calibration halts:

  1. Clean the Top Bezel and Earpiece Grill:Skin oils, makeup foundation, sweat, and pocket lint accumulate directly over the infrared emitter window at the top bezel. Take a dry microfiber cloth with a drop of 70% isopropyl alcohol and gently buff the top glass and speaker mesh clean.
  2. Inspect or Remove Your Screen Protector:Thick tempered glass protectors, cheap matte films, and privacy screen filters are the number one cause of proximity failure. Privacy filters absorb infrared light, preventing the sensor from seeing your face or making it think something is constantly covering it. If the protector lacks an exact cutout for the sensor window, remove it to verify.
  3. Check Your Phone Case:Heavy-duty shockproof cases with thick raised lips around the display can cast a shadow or physically block the infrared angle. Temporarily take off your case and run the test call again.
  4. Force Restart Your Device:Sensor data streams are managed by background operating system daemons. If the sensor HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) crashes or hangs, the sensor stops updating. A hard reboot (Volume Up + Side button on iPhone, or Volume Down + Power for 10 seconds on Android) clears the frozen process.
  5. Run Native Android Diagnostic Secret Codes:Most Android manufacturers include deep hardware diagnostic menus that test the proximity sensor independent of third-party apps:
    ManufacturerDialer CodeTesting Procedure
Samsung Galaxy*#0*#Tap "Sensor". Cover the top of the phone: screen turns green and vibrates when working.
Xiaomi / Redmi / POCO*#*#6484#*#*Opens CIT Hardware Menu. Select "Proximity Sensor" to check distance and recalibrate.
Motorola / Sony*#*#0588#*#*Direct proximity sensor test utility; shows real-time 0/1 trigger states.
  6. Post-Screen Replacement Inspection:If you recently had your cracked screen replaced at an unofficial repair shop, the technician may have forgotten to transfer the tiny rubber light diffuser gasket around the proximity sensor diode. Without this gasket, infrared light leaks directly between the emitter and receiver, permanently blinding the sensor.
