Buying a Used Phone in Michigan

Most Michigan used-phone sales happen on Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp and Craigslist around Detroit, Grand Rapids, Lansing and Ann Arbor. Michigan winters are long, so knowing how cold affects batteries helps you judge a phone fairly.

Where people buy used phones in Michigan

Ann Arbor and East Lansing see a wave of student listings at the end of each semester. Many Michigan police departments offer safe exchange zones at their stations.

Statewide, the same platforms as the rest of the US apply: Swappa and eBay offer buyer protection when you pay through them, while Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp and Craigslist deals are usually cash and as is. The US guide compares them.

How Michigan’s climate affects a used phone

Michigan winters keep phones below freezing for weeks at a time, especially in the north and the Upper Peninsula. Cold makes batteries read low and shut down early, and moving between the cold and a warm house can cause condensation inside the camera.

Cold: what to check

  • Test the phone indoors after it has warmed up. Below freezing, even a healthy battery reads low and can shut off at 20–30%, so a cold test can make a good phone look bad.
  • The reverse matters too: a phone that dies early in winter may simply have a worn battery. Check the battery health figure rather than trusting the seller’s explanation.
  • Look for condensation marks under the camera glass. Bringing a cold phone into a warm room can fog the lens from the inside.
  • Run the battery test while it charges to see that the charge rate is normal.

Michigan law and your rights

The Michigan Consumer Protection Act prohibits unfair, unconscionable or deceptive practices in trade or commerce, so it covers shops and resellers. A one-off private sale is generally “as is”.

Stolen, financed and locked phones

These rules are national. Dial *#06# on the phone and check that IMEI on the free CTIA Stolen Phone Checker. Ask whether the phone is paid off, because a carrier can blacklist it later if installments stop. Put your own SIM in and make a call to confirm it is unlocked. Details are in the US used phone guide.

Test the hardware before you pay

  1. Open mxmob.com/check on the phone and tap Test all. It checks the screen, touch, speakers, microphone, cameras, sensors, buttons, charging and Wi-Fi in about 10 minutes, with no app.
  2. Check battery health, and run the climate checks above for Michigan.
  3. Watch the seller sign out of iCloud or Google and reset the phone.
  4. Put your SIM in and make a call.

The full list is in the used phone checklist, and the price checker tells you what the phone is worth.

FAQ

Does the Michigan Consumer Protection Act cover used phones?

It covers businesses selling to consumers, including used-phone shops and resellers. A casual sale between private individuals usually isn’t covered.

Why does a used phone shut down at 30% in winter?

Cold reduces the battery’s output. A healthy battery recovers indoors. If it still shuts down early at room temperature, the battery is worn.

How do I check for condensation damage?

Look under the camera glass for fog or spots, and test the cameras. Then check the liquid contact indicator in the SIM tray slot.
