Buying a Used Phone in Texas

Texans buy and sell used phones mostly on Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp and Craigslist, and in the big metros many deals happen at police-station exchange zones. Two Texas-specific risks: summer heat that wears batteries out early, and flood-damaged phones that reappear for sale after Gulf Coast storms.

Where people buy used phones in Texas

The Dallas–Fort Worth, Houston, Austin and San Antonio areas each have large Marketplace and OfferUp communities, which means plenty of choice but also plenty of scam listings. Many Texas police departments mark parking spots or lobbies as safe exchange zones; call the non-emergency line to find the nearest one.

Statewide, the same platforms as the rest of the US apply: Swappa and eBay offer buyer protection when you pay through them, while Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp and Craigslist deals are usually cash and as is. The US guide compares them.

How Texas’s climate affects a used phone

Texas summers regularly pass 100°F, and a car interior can go well beyond 140°F, which is enough to permanently reduce battery capacity. On the Gulf Coast, high humidity and hurricane flooding (Houston, Corpus Christi, Beaumont) add the risk of water damage that does not show at first.

Heat: what to check

  • Read battery health before you talk price: on iPhone, Settings › Battery › Battery Health; on Galaxy, the Samsung Members app › Diagnostics › Battery status.
  • Ask whether the phone lived in a car or outdoors at work. Lithium-ion batteries lose capacity for good when they sit above about 95°F (35°C).
  • Look at the screen edge-on for a lifted or bulging back panel: a swollen battery pushes the screen or glass out of line.
  • Run the battery test and the benchmark. A worn battery often shows up as throttling under load.

Humidity and flooding: what to check

  • Check the liquid contact indicator: on most iPhones it is visible inside the SIM tray slot, and turns red or pink after water contact. Many Android phones have one under the SIM tray or behind the back cover.
  • Look for corrosion (green or white crust) in the charging port and the SIM tray, and for fogging under the camera glass.
  • After a hurricane or flood, be wary of a run of “like new” phones from one seller. Storm-damaged phones often work for days before failing.
  • Run the speaker and microphone tests: water damage often shows up first as muffled or crackling audio.

Texas law and your rights

The Texas Deceptive Trade Practices–Consumer Protection Act (DTPA) lets buyers sue businesses for false or misleading claims, such as calling a phone “unlocked” or “new” when it isn’t. It is aimed at businesses; a one-off private sale is generally “as is”, so your protection there is the inspection before you pay, or paying through a platform with buyer protection.

Stolen, financed and locked phones

These rules are national. Dial *#06# on the phone and check that IMEI on the free CTIA Stolen Phone Checker. Ask whether the phone is paid off, because a carrier can blacklist it later if installments stop. Put your own SIM in and make a call to confirm it is unlocked. Details are in the US used phone guide.

Test the hardware before you pay

  1. Open mxmob.com/check on the phone and tap Test all. It checks the screen, touch, speakers, microphone, cameras, sensors, buttons, charging and Wi-Fi in about 10 minutes, with no app.
  2. Check battery health, and run the climate checks above for Texas.
  3. Watch the seller sign out of iCloud or Google and reset the phone.
  4. Put your SIM in and make a call.

The full list is in the used phone checklist, and the price checker tells you what the phone is worth.

FAQ

Where can I safely meet to buy a phone in Texas?

Many Texas police departments have designated safe exchange zones at stations. Meet there in daylight, test the phone, check the IMEI on the CTIA checker, then pay.

How can I tell if a phone was in a Texas flood?

Check the liquid contact indicator in the SIM tray slot, look for corrosion in the charging port, and test the speaker and microphone. Be suspicious of a seller with several “like new” phones right after a storm.

Does the Texas DTPA cover private phone sales?

It mainly covers businesses. If you buy from a store, a reseller or someone selling phones as a business, misleading claims may be covered. A casual private sale is usually as is.
