iPhone 16 battery health and charging

How big each iPhone 16 battery is, how to check its health, what’s normal for a phone released in 2024, and what to do when it won’t charge. Useful whether you own one or are about to buy one used.

Battery capacity of each model

ModelBatteryLaunch price (US)
iPhone 163,561 mAh$799
iPhone 16 Plus4,674 mAh$899
iPhone 16 Pro3,582 mAh$999
iPhone 16 Pro Max4,685 mAh$1199

Charging: USB-C, about 20 W to 30 W with a Power Delivery adapter. Wireless: MagSafe up to 25 W with a 30 W adapter, Qi2 15 W.

Updates: Runs the latest iOS, with many years of updates ahead.

How to check iPhone 16 battery health

  1. Open Settings › Battery › Battery Health & Charging (on iOS 17 and later it may be Settings › Battery › Battery Health). Maximum Capacity is the battery’s health.
  2. Open Settings › General › About to see the cycle count, the manufacture date and the date of first use.
  3. If Peak Performance Capability says the phone had an unexpected shutdown, performance management is on: the battery can’t deliver peak power and needs replacing.

What to know about the iPhone 16 battery

  • Cycle count, manufacture date and first use are in Settings › General › About. A two-year-old iPhone 16 with under 500 cycles and over 90% health is normal.
  • The charge limit can be set from 80% to 100% in steps of 5 (Settings › Battery › Charging).
  • Faster MagSafe (up to 25 W) needs the newer MagSafe charger and a 30 W adapter; older pucks charge at 15 W.

iPhone 16 won’t charge: what to try

  1. Try another USB-C cable and charger you know work. A damaged cable is the most common cause.
  2. Clean the port. USB-C ports fill with pocket lint that stops the plug seating fully; ease it out with a wooden toothpick, never metal.
  3. Restart the phone. A software glitch can stop charging until the next restart.
  4. If it stops at 80%, that is Optimized Battery Charging or the charge limit, not a fault. It resumes later or can be turned off in Settings › Battery.
  5. Try wireless charging, if the model supports it. If wireless works and cable doesn’t, the port or its flex cable is the problem, not the battery.
  6. If it drops from 20–30% to off, or shows a sudden jump in percentage, the battery is worn and needs replacing.

Still not charging? Open mxmob.com/check and run the charging test: it shows the instant the phone sees power, so you can tell a dead port from a dead battery. Our battery test shows the charge level, charging state and estimated time to full.

Buying a used iPhone 16?

Ask the seller for a screenshot of the battery health screen before you travel. When you meet, run the free hardware test on the phone itself, check the IMEI with our IMEI checker, and see our price checker to know what a fair price is. A battery under 85% is a reason to ask for less, not always a reason to walk away.

FAQ

What battery health is normal for a used iPhone 16?

Most batteries lose roughly 4–8% of capacity a year with daily use. Above 85% is fine; 80–85% needs a battery within a year; under 80% means a new battery now. Apple calls a battery under 80% “significantly degraded”.

How much does a new iPhone 16 battery cost?

An official replacement from Apple or an authorised shop usually costs $70–$120 in the US; third-party shops are cheaper but may use lower-quality cells and the phone will show “Unknown Part”. Subtract that from your offer if health is under 85%.

Can I test the iPhone 16 battery and charging before I buy?

Yes. Open mxmob.com/check on the phone and run the charging test: plug the cable in and out and the page confirms it sees power. Run it with the phone’s screen on for ten minutes and watch the percentage.
