Phone Charging Slowly? A Checklist to Find the Cause
Most slow charging comes from the charger, the cable, heat or a setting, not a failing battery. Work through these checks in order; the first few take seconds and fix the problem most of the time.
1. Check what you are plugged into
A laptop USB port or an old 5 W cube charges a modern phone very slowly. Look at the small print on the charger: the wattage (W) or the output volts and amps (multiply them for watts). For fast charging:
- iPhone needs a USB-C charger with USB Power Delivery (PD), 20 W or more.
- Samsung Galaxy “Super Fast Charging” needs USB PD with PPS, 25 W or 45 W depending on the model. A charger without PPS still works, but slower.
- Pixel uses USB PD and PPS as well.
Our charger checker compares your phone with a specific charger and tells you what speed to expect.
2. Swap the cable
Cables wear out inside long before they look damaged, especially near the plug. Try a different cable that you know works. For 45 W Samsung charging you also need a cable rated for 5 A. The cable checker explains which cable ratings matter for which phones.
3. Clean the charging port
Pocket lint packs into the bottom of the port and stops the plug going all the way in. If the plug feels loose or only works at an angle, switch the phone off and gently lift the lint out with a wooden toothpick or a plastic flosser pick. Don’t use metal, and don’t blow into the port.
4. Heat slows charging on purpose
Phones cut the charging speed when the battery is warm, to protect it. Charging in a thick case, in the sun, on a bed, or while gaming or navigating can all keep the speed low. Take the case off, charge somewhere cool, and leave the phone alone for 20 minutes to see the difference.
5. Check the charging settings
- iPhone: Optimized Battery Charging or the 80% Limit in Settings → Battery → Charging holds the charge at 80% on purpose. That is normal, not a fault.
- Samsung: in Settings → Battery → Charging settings, make sure Fast charging is on. Protect battery (or Maximum battery protection on newer versions) stops charging at 80% (85% on older versions).
- Pixel: Adaptive Charging slows overnight charging so it finishes just before your alarm.
6. Wireless is slower
Most wireless chargers deliver far less than a cable, and a misaligned phone charges even slower and gets warmer. If speed matters, use the cable. MagSafe and Qi2 chargers align the phone with magnets and are faster than basic pads.
7. Confirm it is really charging
Open our battery test in Chrome, Edge or Samsung Internet with the charger connected. It shows whether the phone reports that it is charging. If it keeps switching between charging and not charging when you move the cable, the port or cable is loose.
If none of that helps
If a known-good charger and cable, a clean port and a cool phone still give slow charging, the charging port or the battery may be worn. Check the battery health (see our battery health guide). A charging port is usually a cheaper repair than people expect, so get a quote before replacing the phone.
